Canada made history beating Ireland in T20 World Cup
Canada has made a remarkable debut in the ICC T20 World Cup, defeating Ireland and keeping the competition alive in their group. After a spirited fight in their first match, which they lost to the USA, Canada clinched a much-awaited victory in their second match against a Test-playing team, Ireland.
On Friday at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York, Canada made history by defeating Ireland by 12 runs in the ICC Cricket World Cup 'A' group match.
Opting to bat first, Canada scored 137 runs for 7 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. In reply, the Irish team could only manage 125 runs for 7 wickets in their 20 overs.
After losing the toss and being asked to bat first, Canada had a shaky start. The opening partnership was broken with the dismissal of Navneet Dhaliwal when the team score was just 12 runs. They were further pressured by losing 3 more wickets within 53 runs.
However, Nicholas Kirton built a crucial partnership with Shreyas Movva, adding 75 runs for the fifth wicket. This partnership helped Canada reach a fighting total of 137 runs.
Kirton played a key innings, scoring 49 runs off 35 balls, including 3 fours and 2 sixes. Movva contributed 37 runs. For Ireland, Craig Young and Barry McCarthy took 2 wickets each.
Chasing a target of 138, Ireland did not have a disastrous start and had an opening stand of 26 runs before Paul Stirling’s dismissal. However, they couldn’t recover from the loss and kept losing wickets at regular intervals to the Canadian bowlers.
Ireland was under pressure at 59 runs after losing their top six wickets. A remarkable seventh-wicket partnership of 62 runs gave Ireland a glimmer of hope. They needed 17 runs in the final over to win, but Jeremy Gordon’s excellent bowling restricted them to just 4 runs, securing Canada's first victory.
Gordon and Dillon Heyliger each took 2 wickets for Canada, contributing to their historic win.
