Faruk Ahmed Leading the Race to Become BCB President
Since the recent political changes in Bangladesh, there has been a noticeable wave of resignations across various sectors. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is also on the brink of witnessing some changes. Although Nazmul Hassan Papon is still occupying the chair of the BCB president, it seems unlikely that he will continue in this position. Several names are being considered for his successor, with former chief selector Faruk Ahmed being the frontrunner.
Nazmul Hassan Papon may step down from the position of BCB president at any time. In the race to succeed him, names like Faruk Ahmed, Khaled Masud Pilot, Aminul Islam Bulbul, and even Nazmul Abedin Fahim have surfaced. Syed Ashraful Haq is also part of the discussions. However, Faruk Ahmed is leading the pack.
When contacted by Cricket97 regarding the rumors about his potential presidency, Faruk Ahmed confirmed that he had been approached and that he had expressed interest.
Faruk Ahmed told Cricket97, "This (becoming the board president) is still just a rumor. However, I have received a proposal, and they asked if I would be willing to work in the policy-making of the board. I expressed my interest. But I was not explicitly told that it was for the president's position."
Faruk Ahmed confirmed that the proposal came directly from the highest authority in the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Given the proposal and his interest, it seems highly likely that Faruk Ahmed will be the next BCB president.
At 58 years old, Faruk Ahmed has played 7 One Day Internationals (ODIs) for Bangladesh. He served as the chief selector for the Bangladesh national team from 2003 to 2007 and was reappointed to the role in 2013 for a second term. However, he stepped down from this position in 2016.
Although Faruk Ahmed is not currently a BCB councilor, he will need to become one before he can be appointed as the board president. He is expected to enter the BCB as a councilor nominated by the National Sports Council (NSC). In the current board, Jalal Yunus and Ahmed Sajjadul Alam (Bobby) are serving as directors nominated by the NSC. Along with Faruk Ahmed, Nazmul Abedin Fahim is also a potential candidate to replace one of these two in the board.
