Exiled from domestic cricket but still a sought-after name in franchise leagues worldwide, Shakib Al Hasan reminded fans of his brilliance with the bat in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). Yet even his explosive knock could not prevent defeat, as St. Lucia Kings’ opener Tim Seifert powered his side to a commanding win.
Playing for the Antigua & Barbuda Falcons, Shakib came in early when his team was in trouble at 51 for 2. Partnering with opener Amir Jango, he rebuilt the innings with a 95-run stand. Shakib reached his half-century in just 20 balls, smashing David Wiese for 22 runs in a single over (3 fours and 2 sixes).
He eventually fell after a breathtaking 61 off 26 balls, laced with 5 fours and 5 sixes. The innings was a timely reminder of his class, especially after his recent struggles with form following an eye issue post-2023 World Cup. Known more for his natural brilliance than extended training routines, Shakib’s renewed focus in optional sessions seems to be paying off.
But with the ball, the left-arm allrounder was far less effective. After a tidy first over, he was taken apart by Seifert in his second, conceding 22 runs (3 fours, 2 sixes). His spell read 2 overs, 0 wickets for 32 runs.
Chasing 205, Seifert single-handedly dismantled the Falcons’ bowling attack. The New Zealand opener remained unbeaten on a stunning 125 off 53 balls, hammering 10 fours and 9 sixes. He finished the chase in style with a six, guiding St. Lucia Kings to victory in just 17.3 overs with six wickets in hand.
For Bangladesh fans, Shakib’s batting fireworks will be a source of encouragement ahead of upcoming tournaments, though his bowling rust remains a concern.
