Hesson named as Pakistan's white-ball head coach

New Zealand’s Mike Hesson has been named the new head coach of Pakistan's white-ball teams, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed in an official statement today. Hesson, who signed a two-year contract, will oversee both the ODI and T20I squads.

The former New Zealand and Kenya head coach will begin his assignment with the upcoming five-match T20I series against Bangladesh, marking his official debut in the role. However, the series schedule is subject to potential changes.

PSL Commitments Before National Duties

Hesson is currently working with Islamabad United, the reigning champions in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). He will officially join PCB on May 26, the day after the conclusion of the rescheduled PSL 2025 season.

Experienced International Coach

Hesson brings significant international coaching experience, having led New Zealand from 2012 to 2018. Under his leadership, the Black Caps reached their first-ever ICC Cricket World Cup final in 2015. He also previously coached the Kenya national team, adding further depth to his coaching résumé.

He replaces Aqib Javed, who had served as interim white-ball coach following Gary Kirsten’s unexpected resignation in October 2024.

First Assignment: Bangladesh T20I Series

Hesson's first challenge will be guiding Pakistan in the five-match T20I series against Bangladesh, which is scheduled to begin after the PSL ends. The tour will serve as a crucial preparation phase for Pakistan’s white-ball unit ahead of upcoming global tournaments.
