Will Tamim Iqbal Play in the Upcoming ICC Champions Trophy?
The question of whether Tamim Iqbal will feature in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy has been discussed, with Bangladesh's chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu meeting Tamim during the ongoing BPL. The selectors have given Tamim some time to decide on his return to international cricket.
The BCB selection committee has requested Tamim to be part of the Champions Trophy squad, with even captain Nazmul Hossain Shanto expressing his desire to have Tamim in the team. Today, Tamim Iqbal and Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu had an extensive meeting at the Grand Sylhet Hotel, where Tamim requested additional time before making his decision.
After the lengthy discussion with Tamim, Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu addressed the media, saying, "There is a natural interest about Tamim Iqbal's international cricket status. Perhaps, we could have had further discussions with him earlier on this matter. Anyway, we have a major event coming up. We’ve discussed it, but such discussions can’t always result in immediate decisions. This is a big decision."
The final date for announcing the squad for the Champions Trophy is January 12. Before then, the selectors have allowed Tamim time to consult with his family, friends, or coaches. Lipu explained, "There are often discussions with close ones, family, friends, or his favourite coaches, and it’s only fair that Tamim takes his time in this matter. Since we need to announce the squad by the 12th, we have time. There’s no rush; he’s currently playing a tournament, and we’ve had our initial discussions."
Tamim's decision will keep the selectors and the BCB waiting. Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu mentioned that they will wait a few more days before making any final decisions. "For this, we need to wait a bit. Tamim Iqbal has been given time for his final decision. It’s a clear matter, and four days is enough time for us. We’ve done our homework and have an idea of how things might unfold. We respect Tamim, and it’s only fair that we respect his decision. If he wants more time, we’ll grant it. I’ve spoken to the board, and they have no problem with it. So, we ask for your patience for a while longer. You’ve waited long enough for this decision. There's no rush. If you hurry, you might get run out!"
