Uganda won their first match at the T20 World Cup
For the first time in their history, Uganda has achieved a victory in the T20 World Cup. They secured their historic win by defeating Papua New Guinea (PNG) by 3 wickets. Chasing a target of 77 runs, the African team reached the mark with 10 balls to spare, despite losing 7 wickets. Frank Subuga delivered a record-breaking bowling performance in the match, but it was Riazat Ali Shah who received the Player of the Match award for his 33-run innings.
This was Uganda's second match in the World Cup, following a 5-wicket loss to the West Indies. Today, they overcame PNG by 3 wickets. Playing in Guyana, Uganda chased down the 78-run target set by PNG with 10 balls to spare. Uganda's bowlers dominated, but their batting lineup struggled initially. However, Riazat Ali Shah's responsible batting eased the path to victory. This match also marked Uganda's first-ever T20 win against PNG.
Winning the toss, Uganda elected to field first. PNG captain Assad Vala was dismissed for a duck, trapped leg before by spinner Alpesh Ramjani. Another opener, Tony Ura, scored only 1 run off 6 balls, and number three batsman Sese Bau added just 5 runs.
Lega Siaka was run out for 12. PNG then lost wickets regularly, falling to 36 for 4, 48 for 5, and 51 for 6. Uganda's Frank Subuga set a World Cup record with his bowling, reminiscent of Mahmudullah Riyad's feats. Subuga bowled 4 overs, including 2 maidens, and conceded only 4 runs while taking 2 wickets. He now holds the record for the most economical 4-over spell in T20 World Cup history.
Alpesh Ramjani, Cosmas Kyewuta, and Juma Miyagi each took 2 wickets for Uganda. As a result, PNG was bowled out for 77 before completing their allotted overs. Only three PNG batsmen reached double figures, with Hiri Hiri scoring the highest, a 15-run innings.
Chasing an easy target, Uganda stumbled initially, losing 5 wickets for just 26 runs. Riazat Ali Shah then stabilized the innings with a patient approach, scoring 33 runs off 56 balls. Although he was dismissed just 3 runs short of victory, his innings earned him the Player of the Match award.
Ultimately, Uganda clinched their first T20 World Cup victory with 10 balls to spare, defeating PNG by 3 wickets.
