Pakistan has announced a squad of 17 members for the upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand. The squad includes opportunities for middle-order batter Mohammad Irfan Khan and opener Usman Khan, both of whom have been called up for the first time for the Pakistan team. Additionally, experienced players Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim have returned to the squad. The series will be held from April 18th to 27th in Rawalpindi and Lahore, with each match scheduled to take place.
Recently, two batters who performed exceptionally well in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) have been given the chance in the national team. Karachi Kings' Irfan Khan has showcased outstanding performance in the tournament, being named the best emerging player and the best fielder. With a strike rate of 140.16, Irfan has scored 171 runs in the league. This 21-year-old cricketer has played 34 T20 matches, accumulating a total of 499 runs. He represented Pakistan in the ICC Under-19 World Cup in 2020 and 2022.
Usman Khan, who played for Multan Sultans in the PSL, has made significant contributions to his team, securing two centuries and one half-century, leading his team to the final despite facing defeat against Islamabad United.
Born in Karachi, Usman is 28 years old. This right-handed batter recorded a remarkable century in just 36 balls against Quetta Gladiators in the PSL, making it the fastest century in the history of the tournament. In his total of 36 T20 matches, Usman has accumulated 1,207 runs at a strike rate of 146.12.
Leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed has been included in the T20 squad. He was also part of the previous edition's squad against New Zealand but missed matches due to fitness issues. This leg-spinner is also awaiting selection for T20 internationals. Another leg-spinner, Usama Mir, has also secured a place in the 17-member squad.
Pakistan's batting coach and selection committee member Mohammad Yousuf welcomed the two cricketers who received their first call-up for the series against New Zealand. He stated, "From the selection committee's side, I congratulate Mohammad Irfan Khan and Usman Khan. They have rightfully earned their places through consistent performances, and there is no denying that." He further added, "We are very optimistic about their potential. With dedication and effort, they will become impact players for the team."
Imad and Amir have both returned to the team anew. Imad, the all-rounder whose performance in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) compelled his return, and similarly for pacer Amir. They both desire to play for the team again. Both have set their sights on the upcoming T20 World Cup.
Imad has played 66 T20 matches for Pakistan, accumulating 468 runs and taking 65 wickets. He last played a T20 match against New Zealand in Rawalpindi.
Amir last played a T20 match for Pakistan against England in Old Trafford in 2020. As a Pakistani, he has taken 59 wickets in 50 T20 matches.
Chief selector Wahab Riaz commented on the inclusion of Imad and Amir in the team, stating, "The decision to include Imad Wasim and Mohammad Amir was well-thought-out. They were prepared to return to the team. Additionally, we considered Haris Rauf's injury and Mohammad Nawaz's current form. Both Amir and Imad possess the capability to win matches continuously. We believe they will deliver outstanding performances, strengthening the team's objectives."
