Mumbai Indians clinched their first victory of the ongoing IPL season. After facing three consecutive losses, Mumbai secured a 29-run win against Delhi Capitals today. Batting first Mumbai scored a mammoth 234 runs after losing 5 wickets in the designated 20 overs. Delhi managed to chase up to 205 runs, losing 8 wickets in the process.
In Delhi's innings, David Warner made a swift comeback to the pavilion with just 10 runs to his name. However, another opener, Prithvi Shaw, found his form this season with his first fifty. Alongside Abhishek Porwal, Shaw contributed 100 runs to the team's total. Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Shaw with a brilliant yorker, he scored 66 runs off 40 balls.
Porwal departed after scoring 144 runs for the team, with his innings ending on 44 (31) runs, caught on a catch delivered by Bumrah. Today, captain Rishabh Pant failed to impress with the bat. However, South African young batter, Tristan Stubbs, showed promise. Despite the significant target, Delhi fell short.
In Delhi's innings, Stubbs attempted to reduce the deficit. Protea batter smashed three sixes in the 19th over delivered by Romario Shepherd. In the last over, Coetze claimed two more wickets, adding to Delhi's woes. Eventually, Delhi wrapped up their innings at 205 runs, losing 8 wickets.
On the other hand, Stubbs ended his innings with 71* runs off 25 balls, including 7 sixes and 3 fours.
Earlier, Mumbai Indians started their innings with a blast. Both Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan played a brisk inning. Rohit returned to the pavilion scoring 49 runs off 27 balls when the team's total was 80 runs. Surprisingly, Suryakumar Yadav fell for a duck without scoring any runs, becoming Axar Patel's prey.
Soon after, when the team completed their century, Kishan departed scoring 42 runs off 23 balls, becoming Axar Patel's victim. Skipper Hardik Pandya played a momentum-driven innings. Tilak Varma failed to contribute runs. However, the late heroics from Tim David and Romario Shepherd pushed Mumbai's total to 234.
When Pandya departed scoring 39 runs off 33 balls, the team's total stood at 181, with only 13 balls left. In the last two overs, Mumbai managed to add 53 more runs, reaching a total of 234. Shepherd remained unbeaten with 39 runs off 10 balls, and David was not out at 45 runs off 21 balls.
