Rohit Sharma Becomes Oldest Indian Captain To Score 1000 Runs In A Calendar Year
Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma has made history by becoming the oldest Indian captain to score 1,000 runs in a calendar year. Despite being dismissed cheaply in both innings of the Chennai Test against Bangladesh—scoring just 6 runs off 19 balls in the first innings and 5 runs off 7 balls in the second—Rohit reached this milestone.
At 37 years and 144 days old, Rohit has scored a total of 11 runs against Bangladesh, surpassing the 1,000-run mark for the year 2024. He has amassed 1,001 runs so far in 27 innings this year, maintaining an average of 41.70. His tally includes three centuries and six half-centuries.
In 2024, Rohit has scored 157 runs in three ODIs, 378 runs in 11 T20Is, and 466 runs in seven Tests. He currently ranks fifth among the highest run-scorers for the year. Sri Lanka's Pathum Nissanka tops the list with 1,164 runs from 24 matches, followed by Kusal Mendis with 1,161 runs in 33 matches. Rohit's opening partner, Yashasvi Jaiswal, is third with 1,099 runs, while Sri Lanka's Kamindu Mendis is fourth with 1,128 runs.
Rohit is the only captain to have scored 1,000 runs in 2024. He showcased remarkable form in last month's ODI series against Sri Lanka and was the highest run-scorer for India in the upcoming T20 World Cup. His consistent performance since the 2023 ODI World Cup has solidified his status as a key player for the Indian team.
