Ricky Ponting Advises Babar Azam to Follow Virat Kohli's Path
Pakistan’s Babar Azam has been struggling in Test cricket lately, even missing out on selection against England due to poor form. Former Australian World Cup-winning captain Ricky Ponting has offered advice to Babar, suggesting he follow the example set by Virat Kohli to regain his form in Test cricket.
Since 2023, Babar has averaged only 20.7 in Tests, drawing criticism for his performances. Ponting recalled how Kohli overcame a similar slump in 2020-21, taking a break before making a strong comeback. He pointed out how Kohli stepped away from cricket for personal reasons during India’s home series against England, only to return with a match-winning knock against South Africa in the T20 World Cup final.
Ponting highlighted that Kohli’s break in 2022 helped him reset, leading him to score his first century since 2019 and perform exceptionally across formats. Kohli went on to score a record 765 runs in the 2023 ODI World Cup at home, earning the Player of the Tournament award.
Ponting remarked, “Virat took a break to refresh himself, and Babar might need the same. Sometimes, stepping away helps put things in perspective.”
He further advised, “Babar may need to put his kit bag away for a while and take a mental break. Hopefully, he’ll come back recharged and ready to perform.”
