There had been speculation about Ricky Ponting being the new white-ball coach for England. However, Ponting himself has confirmed that he has no interest in becoming the coach of the English team. He has also provided details on why he does not want the role.
According to the former Australian captain, coaching at the international level requires a significant amount of time, which is challenging for him. In response to whether he would consider coaching England, Ponting said at an event:
“No, I will never consider coaching England. I’m stating openly that, given my current life situation, an international coaching job is really not for me. International cricket coaching requires much more time.”
Explaining why he does not plan to work in international cricket, Ponting added, “I have other commitments, work on television, and trying to balance those with spending enough time at home, which I haven’t managed much in recent years. Coaching other international teams is one thing, but coaching England as an Australian is probably a bit different. Right now, I’m quite busy.”
Ricky Ponting has served as the head coach of the Delhi Capitals IPL team for seven years. He expressed his desire to continue working in the IPL, saying, “I want to be an IPL coach again. I have had a great time there every year, whether as a player in the early days or as the head coach in Mumbai over the years. Then I spent seven seasons in Delhi. Unfortunately, things didn’t turn out as I hoped or as the franchise hoped.”
It is worth noting that Matthew Mott resigned as England’s head coach after failing to meet expectations in the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup. Until a new head coach is appointed, Marcus Trescothick is currently serving as the interim coach of the team.
