New Zealand Begin World Cup Campaign with Five-Wicket Win

New Zealand made an impressive start to their ICC T20 World Cup campaign, defeating Afghanistan by five wickets at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday.

After winning the toss and opting to bat, Afghanistan posted 182 for six in their allotted 20 overs. In reply, New Zealand chased down the target inside 18 overs.

Afghanistan got off to a decent start, with openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz (27 off 22 balls) and Ibrahim Zadran adding 35 runs during the powerplay. However, New Zealand quickly clawed their way back into the contest as Lockie Ferguson dismissed both openers in the same over.

Gulbadin Naib then led the recovery under pressure, smashing a rapid 63 off 35 balls, which included three fours and four sixes. He shared a crucial 79-run partnership for the third wicket with Sediquallah Atal (29 off 24 balls). Late contributions from Darwish Rasool (20 off 13 balls), Azmatullah Omarzai (14 off 7 balls) and Mohammad Nabi (10 not out off 7 balls) helped Afghanistan post a competitive total.

New Zealand’s chase began poorly as Finn Allen and Rachin Ravindra were dismissed on consecutive deliveries in the second over. With the score at 14 for two, Tim Seifert and Glenn Phillips steadied the innings with a counter-attacking 74-run stand for the third wicket. Seifert top-scored with 65 off 42 balls, while Phillips struck a brisk 42 off 25 deliveries.

Mark Chapman contributed a valuable 28, and Daryl Mitchell remained unbeaten on 25 as New Zealand sealed the victory with five wickets in hand.
