Mitchell Starc Pulls Out of IPL Amid Security Concerns
Mitchell Starc has officially informed the Delhi Capitals that he will not be rejoining the team for the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. After keeping the franchise in suspense for nearly three days, the Australian speedster is said to have communicated his decision via email on Thursday.
Starc, who was acquired by DC for a hefty ₹11.75 crore, played all 11 matches so far this season, bagging 14 wickets at an average of 26. His presence has been vital to Delhi’s campaign, especially with the team currently sitting in fifth place on the points table with 13 points and in contention for a playoff spot.
The 35-year-old has been a marquee name for the Capitals, with the franchise banking heavily on his experience and impact in crucial fixtures. However, recent geopolitical tensions—most notably the drone threats originating from the Pakistan border—have reportedly made the Australian cricketer uneasy.
Sources indicate that both Starc and fellow Aussie Jake Fraser-McGurk were visibly unsettled during the recent security scare. The duo endured a long, anxiety-filled journey by bus and train from Dharamsala to Delhi last week, which is believed to have played a role in Starc’s final decision.
With Starc out, Delhi Capitals are now turning to Mustafizur Rahman to fill the void. The Bangladesh left-arm pacer, who was brought in as a replacement for Fraser-McGurk, is expected to play a pivotal role in the remaining fixtures. Although there were initial concerns regarding his NOC clearance, sources suggest the 29-year-old is cleared to play.
Mustafizur is no stranger to the IPL, having featured in 54 matches since his debut in 2016, spread across seven seasons. The franchise remains optimistic, with indications that other overseas players are preparing to return to India to see out their IPL commitments.
