West Indies are in a relatively comfortable position on paper at the end of the opening day of the Sylhet Test. Before returning to the dressing room with 235 runs on the scoreboard, centurions Aamir Jangoo and debutant Kevin Wickham helped the visitors build a solid foundation. West Indies are now aiming to post a massive first-innings total and put Bangladesh on the back foot.

Speaking about their target for the first innings and the strategy to secure a victory against Bangladesh, Kevin Wickham said, “I think our target should be to put up a big total, maybe 400 or more than 350. Considering the way the wicket is behaving, it would be better to bat once and put up a big score. That would give us an opportunity to bowl the opposition out twice.”

Bangladesh pacer Taskin Ahmed was asked about the young West Indian batter’s hopes of posting a big total and his remarks about bowling Bangladesh out twice. Responding with a subtle dig, Taskin said, “He made his debut today, so naturally, he is very excited. He also scored runs on his debut, which has added to his excitement. So, he can say many things, and there is nothing wrong with that.”

When asked how far West Indies could go in their first innings and what total Bangladesh could restrict them to, Taskin highlighted the unpredictable nature of Test cricket.

“They could score 450 runs, or they could be bowled out for 50 within an hour tomorrow. That is the beauty of Test cricket. So, there is no reason to be too concerned about his comments. He is new to the international scene, and naturally, he will say a lot of things,” Taskin added.
