LPL innovation : 'Power Blast Overs’ introduced
The Lanka Premier League (LPL), Sri Lanka's domestic franchise league, is set to commence soon. With the increasing popularity of franchise leagues, the number of such tournaments is on the rise. To stay competitive and enhance its attractiveness, the LPL authorities have introduced a new initiative called the 'Power Blast Over'. This new rule is expected to boost the popularity of the LPL further.
On Thursday, Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed this new development through a press release. According to the announcement, an additional 2 overs will be added to the traditional 6-over power play. These new 2 overs, called 'Power Blast Overs', will take place during the 16th and 17th overs of the innings. Unlike the initial 6-over power play, where only 2 fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle, 4 fielders will be permitted outside the circle during the Power Blast Overs.
Samantha Dodanwela, the director of LPL, stated, "We have decided to introduce this rule to make the league more exciting. This will be implemented starting this year. The new rule will enhance the excitement for the fans and make the teams more strategic."
This year's Lanka Premier League will feature three cricketers from Bangladesh: Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, and Towhid Hridoy. Mustafizur and Hridoy will play for the Dambulla Sixers, while Taskin Ahmed will represent the Colombo Strikers.
