Kyle Mayers Replaces Injured Brandon King in West Indies World Cup Squad
The ICC's Event Technical Committee has approved the inclusion of Kyle Mayers as a replacement for Brandon King in the West Indies World Cup squad. The all-rounder Mayers will join the team today.
In a statement on Friday, June 21, the ICC announced that left-handed batsman Kyle Mayers has been officially approved as a replacement for the injured Brandon King in the West Indies' 2024 T20 World Cup squad.
Brandon King has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament due to a side strain. He suffered the injury while batting against England on June 19, having to retire hurt at 23 runs. West Indies lost that match by eight wickets.
Kyle Mayers brings considerable experience to the squad, with 37 T20I matches under his belt. He is expected to join the squad on Saturday, June 22, ahead of their final Super Eight match against South Africa on June 23.
Despite winning all four of their group stage matches, West Indies started their Super Eight campaign with a loss. However, they secured a significant nine-wicket victory against co-hosts USA today. The team will face South Africa on Sunday in North Sound, Antigua.
Brandon King's absence is a significant setback for West Indies. Since the beginning of 2023, he has been the team's top T20 run-scorer, amassing 651 runs in 23 innings, including four half-centuries. In the current World Cup, his highest score was 34 against Papua New Guinea, totaling just 86 runs in five innings.
