In response to Sri Lanka’s first innings total of 236, England scored 358 runs. Despite trailing by 122 runs, Sri Lanka managed 326 in their second innings. England chased down the target of 204 runs to secure the win.

On the fourth day, England needed 204 runs to win. The two English openers started aggressively, but early losses put the home team under pressure. After Daniel Lawrence was dismissed for 34, England found themselves struggling at 70 for 3.

Harry Brook’s dismissal at 32 runs left England further in a precarious position at 119 for 4. However, experienced batsmen Joe Root and Jamie Smith steadied the innings. Joe Root played a crucial unbeaten knock of 62 off 128 balls. His partnership with Jamie Smith, who contributed 39 runs, was pivotal, with their 64-run stand guiding England to victory. Smith was dismissed, but Root remained unbeaten, leading England to a five-wicket win with 5 wickets in hand.

On the fourth day, Sri Lanka resumed their innings at 187 for 5. Kamindu Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal added a crucial 107-run partnership for the seventh wicket, putting Sri Lanka in a strong position. Mendis scored 113 runs, while Chandimal contributed 79 runs before being dismissed.
