Italy Make History with First World Cup Win, Thrash Nepal by 10 Wickets

Italy created history in the T20 World Cup by securing their first-ever victory in the tournament. On Thursday at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, they thrashed Nepal by 10 wickets to register a landmark win.

Making their tournament debut, Italy were eager to prove they were not merely participants. Nepal, on the other hand, were looking to bounce back after a heartbreaking defeat to England in their opening match. However, in this clash between two associate nations, it was Italy who dominated from start to finish.

After winning the toss and opting to field, Italy delivered a disciplined bowling performance backed by sharp fielding to restrict Nepal to 123 in 19.3 overs.

Nepal never truly recovered after the early dismissal of Kushal Bhurtel. Captain Rohit Paudel attempted to inject momentum with a 23 off 14 balls, while Aarif Sheikh top-scored with 27 down the order. Karan KC added a late flourish with a quick 18, but it was far from enough.

Italy’s spin-heavy attack kept Nepal under constant pressure. Leg-spinner Crishan Kalugamage claimed three wickets, including those of captain Paudel and experienced Dipendra Singh Airee. Off-spinner Benjamin Manenti was exceptional, conceding just nine runs in his four overs while taking two wickets.

Chasing a modest target of 124, Italy gave Nepal no chance. Anthony Mosca and his brother Justin Mosca launched an aggressive assault from the outset. Justin struck an unbeaten 60, hitting five fours and three sixes, while elder brother Anthony smashed an unbeaten 62 off 32 balls, including six sixes and three fours.

Italy sealed the victory in just 12.4 overs without losing a wicket. With such a commanding performance on debut, the European side sent a strong message about their potential on the World Cup stage.
