India Wins 2025 Champions Trophy: Dominates New Zealand in the Final
The 2025 Champions Trophy final in Dubai did not see a repeat of the 2000 final, but it did witness a dominant performance from Team India, who emerged as the unbeaten champions of the tournament. India defeated New Zealand in the final by 4 wickets with 6 balls remaining, continuing their remarkable run throughout the competition.
New Zealand, after being put to bat first, could only manage to score 251 runs in their allotted 50 overs, losing 7 wickets. Indian spinners were the key to restricting New Zealand, with tight bowling stifling their scoring opportunities. In response, India’s opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill provided a solid start, putting up 105 runs together. Rohit scored a fluent 76 runs before being dismissed, and Shreyas Iyer contributed a valuable 48 runs.
However, the chase saw a brief wobble when Shubman Gill was dismissed for 31, and the ever-reliable Virat Kohli failed to make an impact in the mega final, scoring just 1 run before returning to the pavilion. Despite the setback, India secured the win thanks to a steady partnership between Lokesh Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja, who guided the team home.
Earlier, in the final at the Dubai International Stadium, New Zealand won the toss and opted to bat. They managed to score 251 runs in 50 overs, with Michael Bracewell remaining unbeaten on 53 runs. New Zealand began aggressively, reaching 69 runs by the end of the first powerplay (the first 10 overs), but India’s spin attack managed to put the brakes on their progress.
Daryl Mitchell and Michael Bracewell played pivotal roles in steadying New Zealand's innings, with Mitchell scoring 63 runs off 101 balls and Bracewell’s 40-ball 53 adding significant runs. However, it was the Indian spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy that turned the tide in India’s favor. Varun, with his deceptive spin, claimed 2 crucial wickets for just 45 runs, leaving the New Zealand batting lineup in disarray.
India’s victory in the final capped off a perfect tournament, with the team finishing unbeaten and taking home the 2025 Champions Trophy title.
