India-Canada Match Abandoned Due to Rain, Record Set at Florida's Ground
This year's ICC T20 World Cup has seen more interruptions due to rain than any other World Cup. In a unique record for the T20 World Cup, the most number of matches have been abandoned without a toss at Florida's Lauderhill, matching the record of Australia's Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Florida's ground set this record with the abandonment of the India-Canada match on Saturday.
Previously, matches between Nepal-Sri Lanka and the two USA-Ireland fixtures were also washed out at Lauderhill. The same situation occurred again with the India-Canada match. The match could not proceed due to a wet outfield.
Before the India-Canada match on Saturday, there was no rain at Lauderhill. However, prior heavy rainfall had left the outfield too wet. The scheduled toss could not take place, and the umpires eventually declared the match abandoned. As a result, the teams had to share the points.
The India-Canada match was merely a formality, as two teams from Group 'A' had already secured their spots in the Super Eight. Hence, the outcome of this match would not have affected their standings.
India, with 3 wins and 1 draw in 4 matches, leading Group 'A' with 7 points, has secured its place in the Super Eight as the first team. The USA, with 5 points, has advanced as the second team from Group 'A'. In the Super Eight, India will face Australia, Afghanistan, and the 2nd team from Group 'D' (either Bangladesh or the Netherlands).
