The ICC, the highest governing body of cricket, has announced the names of the male and female cricketers vying for the Player of the Month award for May. Shaheen Shah Afridi, Gudakesh Motie, and Lorcan Tucker are the contenders for this accolade, with one of them set to be crowned the ICC Player of the Month.
Gudakesh Motie, one of the West Indies' trio of spinners in the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup, played a significant role in his team’s series win against South Africa last month. Motie concluded May with eight wickets at an average of 8.5.
Pakistan’s left-arm pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi had an impressive May, taking 10 wickets at an average of 14.5. Afridi was in formidable form during his team’s tours of Ireland and England, delivering outstanding performances.
Irish wicketkeeper-batsman Lorcan Tucker, who made it to the shortlist, scored a total of 227 runs in six innings at an average of 37.83 last month. In the series against Pakistan, he scored only 4 runs in the first T20 match but shone brightly in the subsequent games with scores of 51 and 73. He continued his excellent form with scores of 40 against the Netherlands and 55 against Scotland, earning his place on the shortlist.
The cricketing world now waits to see who will be named the ICC Player of the Month for May.
