I want to open in T20Is: Shubman Gill eyes slots left vacant by Kohli, Rohit

Opener Shubman Gill did not find a place in the Indian cricket team for the T20 World Cup. However, he was kept as a standby player for the matches held in the United States. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli handled the opening duties for India in the World Cup. With both having retired after winning the World Cup, Gill dreams of filling the vacant opener spot.

Due to the fatigue from the World Cup, India announced the squad for the Zimbabwe tour earlier, excluding the regular players. Shubman Gill was named the captain of that squad. Getting a spot in the main Indian team is tough, but in the absence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, this opener might just get his chance.

Expressing his desire to open in the T20 format, Gill said, "Rohit Bhai was an opener. Kohli Bhai also opened in the World Cup. I have played the role of an opener in T20s before. I want to continue opening in this format in the future."

Shubman Gill, considered the future of Indian cricket, has been given the captaincy for the Zimbabwe series. However, Gill does not want to add pressure on himself by trying to emulate Kohli and Rohit, "There will always be pressure and expectations. It will be a lot of pressure for me if I try to achieve what Rohit Bhai and Kohli Bhai have achieved. Everyone has their own goals. Trying to achieve something by copying others will put you under pressure."

This is not Gill's first time as a captain. He captained the Gujarat Titans in this year's IPL. He intends to utilize that experience, "I have learned a lot, understood myself better. I have also understood the way to lead. The main issue is the mental aspect. On the field, there aren't any particularly difficult tasks."
