Hridoy left disappointed with umpiring decisions
The Bangladesh team is immersed in regret after failing to defeat South Africa despite being in a strong position in the T20 World Cup. With only 20 runs needed from the last 3 overs, and set batters Mahmudullah Riyad and Towhid Hridoy at the crease, the target seemed achievable. However, Hridoy’s dismissal and a poor shot selection by Zakir brought the equation to 11 runs needed off the last 6 balls. Ultimately, Bangladesh’s defeat was sealed by 4 runs. Towhid Hridoy expressed his frustration over umpiring decisions in the post-match press conference.
In a thrilling encounter at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York, Bangladesh lost to South Africa by 4 runs in a 'D' group match. This marked South Africa's ninth consecutive T20 win over Bangladesh, and their fourth win in the World Cup. Hridoy criticized the umpiring decisions that played a role in their defeat.
Throughout Bangladesh's innings, there were several controversial decisions by the on-field umpires. In the post-match press conference, Towhid Hridoy said,
"To be honest, the decisions were not good. In a tight match, those decisions didn't go in our favor. The umpire gave out, but it was difficult for us. Those four runs could have changed the outcome of the match. There's nothing more to say…"
Hridoy expressed no anger towards ICC rules but highlighted the need for better umpiring,
"Rules are set by the ICC, which is beyond our control. But those four runs were crucial for us. Umpires are human and can make mistakes, but there were 2-1 wides that weren't given. In a venue where runs are hard to come by, every single run counts. Those 4 runs or the 2 close wide calls were significant. My dismissal was also an umpire’s call. There is room for improvement in these areas. The ICC's rules are beyond our control."
The close calls and decisions significantly impacted the low-scoring match, emphasizing the importance of every run and fair umpiring in such critical games.
