Heather Knight’s Batting Overshadows Fahima and Mostari in a Thrilling Contest
In the Guwahati leg of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025, Bangladesh’s brilliant fight ultimately came up short against the experienced English batter Heather Knight. Sobhana Mostari’s first ODI fifty, Rabeya Khan’s explosive innings, and Fahima Khatun’s magical spin all seemed to pale in comparison to Knight’s unbeaten 79. England secured a 4-wicket victory with 23 balls to spare.
Chasing a modest target of 178, England’s start was shaky. Openers Tammy Beaumont (13) and Amy Jones (1) fell cheaply, undone by Marufa Akter’s pace and swing. Fahima Khatun then struck with twin blows in the 19th over, removing captain Nat Sciver-Brunt (32) and Sophia Dunkley (0), and followed it up by dismissing Emma Lamb (1) in the 23rd over. Her three wickets for just 16 runs revived Bangladesh’s hopes of an upset.
However, it was Heather Knight who guided England to victory. Anchoring one end, she gradually took control of the chase. Her 111-ball 79 was a masterclass in patience, temperament, and experience. She combined with right-hander Charlie Dean (27*) to form an unbeaten 79-run partnership, sealing the win in 46.1 overs.
Bangladesh’s innings also had a shaky start after losing the toss. Openers Rubia Haider (4) and captain Nigar Sultana Jyoti (0) were back in the pavilion within 25 runs. Sobhana Mostari then played a patient 108-ball innings, scoring a brilliant 60. This marked her first ODI fifty and only the third fifty for Bangladesh in Women’s World Cup history.
The most eye-catching part of Bangladesh’s innings was Rabeya Khan’s assault. In just 27 balls, she scored 43 runs, including a six and three fours. She finished with a six in the final over to take Bangladesh to 178, with two balls to spare.
For England, Sophie Ecclestone was the most successful bowler, taking 3 wickets for just 24 runs in 10 overs. Linsi Smith and Charlie Dean took 2 wickets each, while captain Heather Knight also chipped in with 2 scalps.
Though the result went England’s way, Bangladesh showcased courage, resilience, and promise for the future. Mostari’s composure, Fahima’s brilliant bowling, and Rabeya’s aggression highlighted a spirited display of competitive cricket.
