The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has officially dismissed Chandika Hathurusingha as head coach, citing misconduct and violations of the code of conduct. BCB president Faruk Ahmed elaborated on the reasons for this decision during a press conference.
Hathurusingha's departure was influenced by multiple incidents that raised concerns about his behavior toward national team players. "There have been two or three incidents that were quite distressing for me as a former player, and they weren't good examples for the team either," Ahmed stated. He emphasized that physical harm to a national player is unacceptable, referring to the disciplinary actions taken against Hathurusingha.
Additionally, issues related to leave-taking without proper communication with the board were noted as part of the reasoning behind the dismissal.
With Hathurusingha's exit, BCB has swiftly appointed Phil Simmons as the new head coach. Simmons, a former medium-fast bowler and opening batsman, has a rich coaching history with teams including Zimbabwe, Ireland, West Indies, Afghanistan, and Papua New Guinea.
Ahmed expressed confidence in Simmons, stating, "He is a West Indian who has been a head coach for many countries. His track record is good, and he has extensive experience in franchise cricket, including work in Pakistan and Major League Cricket in the USA. We believe he is the best option for this interim period leading up to the Champions Trophy."
BCB considered several candidates before selecting Simmons, emphasizing the need for a coach with a solid track record and a commitment to the team's success. The decision aims to ensure a positive environment for the players while preparing for upcoming challenges.
