Bangladesh Stumble Late After Bright Start on Day Two of Chattogram Test
What began as a promising day for Bangladesh ended in frustration, as the hosts lost quick wickets in the final session to finish Day 2 of the Chattogram Test under pressure. Bangladesh closed the day on 291 for 7, holding a 64-run lead over Zimbabwe in their first innings.
Despite a solid morning session, where the top order laid a strong foundation, the loss of key wickets in the evening—particularly the run out of senior batter Mushfiqur Rahim—halted the momentum and left the home side unsettled heading into Day 3.
At stumps, Mehidy Hasan Miraz remained unbeaten on 16, joined by Taijul Islam after Nayeem Hasan’s dismissal. The pair will look to extend Bangladesh’s lead when play resumes tomorrow morning.
Mushfiqur Rahim, who had looked well set on 40 off 59 balls, was dismissed in frustrating fashion via an unnecessary run out—another blow in an increasingly nervy session. Before that, wicketkeeper-batter Zakir Ali Anik fell cheaply, scoring just 5 runs off 13 deliveries before offering a return catch to the bowler.
Zimbabwe’s leg-spinner Vincent Masakesa proved instrumental in Bangladesh's late collapse. He claimed three wickets on the day—including that of captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, who had anchored the innings earlier. Masakesa's first Test wicket was Shanto, and he soon added the scalps of Zakir and Nayeem Hasan to his tally.
Bangladesh will be hoping for a more controlled performance on Day 3 as they seek to build a more commanding lead over the visitors.
