Australia's Mitchell Marsh Ruled Out of 2025 ICC Champions Trophy Due to Back Injury
In a major blow ahead of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, Australia's star all-rounder Mitchell Marsh has been ruled out of the tournament due to a recurring back injury. Cricket Australia (CA) confirmed today that Marsh will not be part of the squad.
In a statement regarding Marsh's injury, Cricket Australia said, "The National Selection Panel and Australia's medical department have decided to exclude Mitchell Marsh from the Champions Trophy due to his injury. Marsh, who is currently undergoing rehabilitation, has not made sufficient progress. Recently, the pain in his lower back has worsened, leading the selection panel to make this decision. To give him the best chance to recover fully, his rehabilitation period has been extended."
Cricket Australia's selection panel will announce Marsh's replacement once a decision is made following their meeting.
Marsh had been struggling with injuries for a while. He was dropped from the Australian squad for the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy due to his fitness issues but was still included in the Champions Trophy squad. However, his recurring injury has forced his removal from the team.
According to ESPN Cricinfo, young destructive batter Jack Fraser-McGurk could be a potential replacement for Marsh in the Champions Trophy squad, though the official announcement will be made soon.
Australia’s campaign in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy is set to begin on February 22 in Lahore, where they will face England. They will then play South Africa on February 25 and Afghanistan on February 28.
