Australia's Chances in the ICC Champions Trophy Doubtful as Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood Face Injury Concerns
With the ICC Champions Trophy just around the corner, Australia has received some disappointing news regarding their squad. The team's regular captain, Pat Cummins, is now in doubt for the tournament, with his coach, Andrew McDonald, suggesting that his participation is unlikely. A similar situation is also looming over fellow pace bowler Josh Hazlewood.
Speaking about Pat Cummins, coach McDonald stated that the chances of the captain playing in the Champions Trophy are slim. Cummins is currently sidelined due to an injury. His ankle injury first became a concern during the Border-Gavaskar series, where he had to take on extra bowling duties. Unfortunately, despite the passage of time, there has been no positive news regarding his recovery.
Although there were initial hopes for Cummins’ inclusion, Australia had named him as the captain of the squad. However, speaking on SEN Radio, McDonald confirmed that Cummins has not yet resumed any bowling and his chances of playing are significantly reduced. As a result, Australia is considering alternatives for the captaincy.
“We need to make decisions about leadership. When we had discussions with Pat regarding the Champions Trophy plans, both Steve Smith and Travis Head were mentioned as possible captains,” McDonald said. "We will be looking in their direction for leadership in Pat's absence."
In addition to Cummins, there is also concern over Josh Hazlewood’s fitness. McDonald mentioned that Hazlewood is still fighting to regain full fitness, and the next few days will be crucial. “We’ll receive medical updates soon, and we’ll have a better understanding of the situation and be able to inform everyone about the path forward," said the coach.
With these key players in doubt, Australia’s squad for the Champions Trophy faces uncertainty, and the team will need to quickly adapt as the tournament draws near.
