In their Group B match of the T20 World Cup, Australia secured a commanding 67-run victory over Ireland, delivering an impressive opening performance. The match took place on Wednesday at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, where Australia’s batting and bowling showed remarkable coordination.

Nathan Ellis showcased his form with an outstanding 4/12, playing a crucial role for the team. With key bowlers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazelwood absent, Ellis strengthened Australia’s attack, while spinner Adam Zampa also took four wickets. Ireland’s captain Paul Stirling, however, had to leave the field due to injury after facing just one ball.

For Australia, openers Travis Head, Josh Inglis, and Cameron Green provided a strong start in the powerplay. Although all three were dismissed by the seventh over, Australia’s total of 182 runs proved competitive. The players’ hard work and patience, including running 22 twos between the wickets, significantly contributed to the team’s score.

Ireland struggled from the start of their chase. Stirling’s injury added pressure, though Ross Adair and George Dockrell offered some resistance. However, successive wickets from Ellis and Zampa prevented Ireland from ever gaining momentum, quickly ending any hopes of an upset.

Ireland were eventually bowled out for 115. Despite George Dockrell’s 41-run effort, a comeback was never on the cards.

The win also provided a significant confidence boost for Australia. Their performance in the opening match will surely strengthen the team’s morale. Australia will face Zimbabwe in their next match on Friday.
