A T20 World Cup to Forget for Batters
A T20 World Cup to Forget for Batters
The latest edition of the Men's T20 World Cup witnessed the lowest scoring rate in the history of the tournament. Many big names struggled on the pitches in the United States. Despite being the slowest T20 World Cup, it saw the most sixes, an undefeated champion, and several other notable statistics.
Jasprit Bumrah's Historic Performance
Jasprit Bumrah became the first Player of the Tournament in T20 World Cup history without scoring a single run. He finished with an economy rate of 4.17, the best for any bowler who delivered over 100 balls in a single edition. Bumrah conceded the most runs (29) in a match against Australia, yet his overall performance was stellar. In 29.4 overs, he took 15 wickets while allowing only 12 boundaries, including two sixes.
Bumrah's only batting appearance in the tournament resulted in a golden duck against Pakistan. Despite this, his exceptional bowling earned him the Player of the Tournament award.
Lowest Scoring Rate
The overall run rate for this World Cup was 7.09, the lowest in the history of the Men's T20 World Cup. The previous lowest was 7.43 in the 2021 edition held in the UAE.
Highest and Lowest Team Scores
The highest team score was 218 by the West Indies against Afghanistan at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Saint Lucia. Uganda set the record for the lowest team score, being bowled out for 39 by the West Indies in just 12 overs. This score matched the lowest in T20 World Cup history, previously set by the Netherlands against Sri Lanka in 2014. In another match, Uganda managed only 40 runs against New Zealand, the second-lowest score in T20 World Cup history.
Sixes Galore
A total of 517 sixes were hit during the tournament, making it the first T20 World Cup to surpass 500 sixes. The previous record was 405 sixes in the 2021 edition. The ratio of balls per six was 21.35, the best ever.
No Centuries
For the second time in T20 World Cup history, no centuries were scored. The highest individual score was Nicholas Pooran's unbeaten 98 against Afghanistan. The previous century-less edition was in 2009, with Tillakaratne Dilshan's unbeaten 96 being the highest score.
Bowlers' Dominance
Bowlers enjoyed remarkable success in the 2024 World Cup, with 19 instances of bowlers taking four or more wickets in a match, the most in any Men's T20 World Cup.
Notable Performances
- Rishabh Pant: Scored 171 runs without a half-century, the second-highest in a T20 World Cup. In 2014, Bangladesh's Anamul Haque Bijoy scored 184 runs with a highest score of 44*. Pant's highest score was 42 against Pakistan.
- Mohammad Amir: Bowled 96 balls without conceding a six, becoming the first bowler to achieve this in two different T20 World Cup editions (minimum ten overs).
India's Undefeated Campaign
India became the first team to win the Men's T20 World Cup without losing a single match. They won all eight of their matches, with one group stage match against Canada being abandoned without a toss.
