A hatrick for Pat Cummins against Bangladesh

Pat Cummins achieved the first hat-trick of the 2024 T20 World Cup and the seventh in the history of the T20 World Cup. Cummins became the second Australian to achieve this feat, following Brett Lee, and coincidentally, it was also against Bangladesh.

In the 2007 tournament, Brett Lee took 3 wickets for 27 runs and completed a hat-trick against Bangladesh. Pat Cummins followed in his footsteps by securing the second hat-trick for Australia in a T20 World Cup.

Cummins dismissed Riyad and Mehdi with the last two deliveries of his third over. He then returned in the final over of the innings to dismiss Tawhid Hridoy on the first ball, thereby writing his name in the record books. This hat-trick marked the first of this World Cup, and Bangladesh’s innings ended at 140 runs.

Overall, this was the seventh hat-trick taken against Bangladesh across all formats. In T20s, this is the highest number of hat-tricks against any team. Mahmudullah Riyad has been involved (as a wicket) in three of these hat-tricks, the most for any batter in the 20-over format. Mahmudullah is now associated with six hat-tricks in international cricket: three in T20s, two in ODIs, and one in Tests.
