Rain Washes Out Match After Shreyas and Abhisheks Batting Blitz

The first T20 International of the five-match series between England and India at Chester-le-Street was abandoned due to rain. After being asked to bat first, India posted an imposing total of 189/7 in their allotted 20 overs. However, heavy rain began immediately after India’s innings at the Riverside Ground. With no improvement in the weather despite a lengthy delay, the umpires were forced to abandon the match without England facing a single delivery.

Having won the toss, England captain Shreyas Iyer elected to bat first. However, India’s innings got off to a disastrous start as they lost opener Sanju Samson (1) and wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan (0) with just six runs on the board. Kishan was particularly unfortunate to be run out.

Recovering from the early setback, young opener Abhishek Sharma launched a counterattack against the England bowlers. He smashed a blistering 59 off just 24 deliveries, an innings that featured six fours and four sixes. Batting at a strike rate of 245.83, Abhishek put India back in control before being trapped leg before wicket by Sam Curran. He also shared an excellent partnership with captain Shreyas Iyer.

Although Abhishek departed, skipper Shreyas Iyer maintained the momentum with a composed knock of 68 from 47 balls, including six fours and one six. Tilak Varma (13) fell quickly in the latter stages, but Shivam Dube provided a strong finish with an unbeaten 42 off 21 balls, striking two fours and three sixes. Harshit Rana and Axar Patel were dismissed in the final over, but India still managed to post a formidable total of 189.

Among England’s bowlers, pacer Saqib Mahmood was the standout performer, claiming three crucial wickets—Sanju Samson, Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma—while conceding 33 runs in his four overs. Sam Curran and Adil Rashid picked up one wicket each. However, Luke Wood (3 overs, 35 runs) and Will Jacks (3 overs, 30 runs) proved expensive.

The second T20 International of the series is scheduled to be played on July 4 at Old Trafford in Manchester.
