Dan Lawrence Called Up to England Squad After Jos Buttler Injury

England have suffered a major blow ahead of the third and final T20I or One-Day International (ODI) against Sri Lanka, with experienced wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler ruled out of the squad due to a hamstring injury.

Right-handed all-rounder Dan Lawrence has been called up as his replacement. With the three-match series currently level at 1-1, tomorrow’s match at The Oval will decide the series.

While chasing a target of 322 in the second ODI, Buttler came to the crease with England on 157 for 3. After playing a brilliant innings and reaching 66, he injured his left hamstring while attempting to take two runs. Although he returned to bat later after leaving the field, he could not guide his team to victory as England eventually lost the match by 16 runs.

Buttler’s absence presents a major opportunity for young wicketkeeper-batter Jordan Cox to establish himself as a regular member of the national team. Cox, who has played three ODIs, recently impressed during England’s Test series against Pakistan. He scored 202 runs at an average of 50.50 in the Tests.

Speaking about his opportunity in the ODI side, Cox said, “If I get the opportunity, it would be great. Jos is one of the best white-ball cricketers we’ve ever produced. But these opportunities come in the game, and we have to be ready to take on that challenge.”

Meanwhile, Dan Lawrence, who has played 17 Tests, is yet to make his international debut in limited-overs cricket. His useful off-spin bowling also puts him in contention for a place in the playing XI.

With the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup in sight, England will be looking to fine-tune their team combination in the series decider.
