IPL slips in global T20 rankings, BPL placed tenth
Despite its commercial dominance and widespread popularity, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has slipped in the latest global T20 league rankings. In the recent assessment by the World Cricketers’ Association (WCA), the IPL has been placed third.
The report by the organization, formerly known as the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA), states that despite being the most lucrative and high-profile league in the world, the IPL still needs to improve in areas related to player rights and welfare. In these aspects, the tournament is considered to be slightly behind its competitors.
England’s franchise tournament, The Hundred, has claimed the top spot in the rankings with 75.2 points, while South Africa’s SA20 is in second place with 68 points.
The IPL, with 62.6 points, is in third place, just ahead of Australia’s Big Bash League, which has 62.5 points. Pakistan Super League (PSL) is ranked fifth with 48 points.
Among the remaining leagues in the top ten, Major League Cricket is in sixth place, followed by the UAE’s ILT20 in seventh, the Caribbean Premier League in eighth, Abu Dhabi T10 in ninth, and the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) in tenth.
The WCA’s assessment highlights that beyond financial strength, ensuring a player-friendly environment and proper welfare measures plays a crucial role in determining the standard of a league.
