Zimbabwe’s perfect performance in the T20 World Cup continued today. In the final Group B match, they chased down a target of 179 against Sri Lanka to secure a six-wicket victory. With this win, Zimbabwe topped the group with seven points from four matches, finishing the group stage unbeaten.
Opener Brian Bennett and captain Sikandar Raza were the heroes of the win. Bennett anchored the innings, while Raza delivered a brilliant finishing performance. Tony Munyonga sealed the match by hitting a six off the first ball from Maheesh Theekshana in the final over.
Bennett scored 63 runs off 48 balls. Marumani contributed 34 runs, while Raza played a 45-run innings off 26 balls before giving a catch to Dasun Shanaka. Zimbabwe won the match with 3 balls and 6 wickets remaining.
Earlier, Sri Lanka batted first and scored 178/7 in 20 overs. Pathum Nissanka scored 62 off 41 balls, and Pavan Rathnayake added 44 off 25 balls. After 12 overs, Sri Lanka was in a strong position at 100/1, but their scoring slowed between overs 13–17, adding only 42 runs. Graeme Cremer and Brad Evans shared four wickets to slow down Sri Lanka’s scoring, while Ryan Burl took the crucial wicket of Kusal Mendis.
