Fresh uncertainty has emerged surrounding the future of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). Following controversies over fixing allegations, financial irregularities, and unpaid player salaries in the last two editions, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has now taken a firm stance regarding the tournament’s organization. BCB Ad Hoc Committee Chairman Tamim Iqbal hinted that the tournament should not be held unless proper preparation and reliable franchises are ensured.

Speaking at a press conference in the capital on Thursday, Tamim Iqbal and BCB representative Fahim Sinha addressed various irregularities and organizational shortcomings related to the BPL. Tamim made it clear that the tournament should not be arranged merely for the sake of holding it.

While discussing the current state of the BPL and the franchise crisis, BCB Ad Hoc Committee Chairman Tamim Iqbal said, “I will not organize a tournament like the BPL in a patchwork manner. If we cannot secure franchises, then I do not think the BPL should be held. It is better not to hold the BPL at all than to organize it just for the sake of doing so. I have always believed that the BPL should be held regularly. But the biggest problem is the franchises.”

At the press conference, Tamim also highlighted that the irresponsible actions and irregularities of individuals associated with the BPL had caused significant suffering for the BCB. He stressed the importance of ensuring accountability in such matters.

Speaking about responsibility and accountability as the head of the BCB Ad Hoc Committee, Tamim said, “If I do something that causes suffering for the BCB, then I should be held accountable. You can make mistakes. But when you knowingly make mistakes, then it becomes a crime.”

Meanwhile, BCB representative Fahim Sinha revealed that some teams in the most recent BPL edition participated without formal agreements with the board. In addition, the BCB had to take over the responsibilities of Chattogram Royals just before the tournament began, which resulted in significant financial losses for the board.

Discussing team management and player contract procedures in the BPL, Fahim Sinha said, “There were no agreements with two teams, yet they still played an entire season. Those two teams were Sylhet and Noakhali. The BCB had to take over the responsibility of Chattogram Royals. We are now suffering because of this wrong decision by the BCB. We will ensure that such incidents do not happen in the future. We have spoken with Mithun, the president of the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB). The BCB will provide guidelines on how player contracts should be handled, so that players do not face difficulties.”
