England Crush Zimbabwe by an Innings, Bashir Stars with Record-Breaking Spell
England registered a comprehensive victory by an innings and 45 runs over Zimbabwe in the only Test at Trent Bridge, thanks to a stunning bowling performance by 21-year-old off-spinner Shoaib Bashir.
Bashir's Brilliance Seals the Win
Bashir, who returned figures of 6 for 81, delivered his best bowling performance in Test cricket to date. His performance not only ensured victory for England but also saw him etch his name in the record books:
He became the youngest English bowler to reach 50 Test wickets.
He joined an elite group as the fourth Englishman to take three five-wicket hauls before turning 22.
Zimbabwe Fight Back But Fall Short
In their second innings, Zimbabwe posted 255 runs, showing some resistance. Sean Williams played a blistering knock of 82 off 88 balls, forming a crucial 122-run partnership with Ben Curran.
Curran, who made 37, was twice dropped and survived a reviewed LBW decision before being dismissed. Bashir crucially broke the stand by dismissing both Williams and Curran, either side of the lunch break.
While Sikandar Raza chipped in with a valiant 60, wickets continued to fall regularly from the other end. One of the standout moments came when Harry Brook took a stunning catch at second slip to dismiss Wesley Madhevere—a wicket that gave Ben Stokes his third scalp on return from injury.
Mixed Performance from England’s Pacers
Despite the win, England's pace attack came under scrutiny for an underwhelming performance on Day 3, lacking penetration. However, Bashir’s spin ensured a commanding finish, helping England wrap up the match in style.
Perfect Prep Ahead of India Series
This emphatic win will give England a major confidence boost ahead of their high-profile upcoming series against India. For Bashir, it was a career-defining performance and a powerful reminder of his potential on the international stage.
