New Zealand piled up a massive first-innings total in the third Test, riding on Devon Conway’s epic 227. At the close of play on day two at Mount Maunganui, the hosts declared their innings at 575 for 8. In reply, West Indies reached 110 without loss by stumps but still trail by 465 runs.
In the fading light, openers Brandon King and John Campbell negotiated the new ball confidently. The pair safely saw off 23 overs, with King unbeaten on 55 and Campbell not out on 45 at the end of the day.
Opener Devon Conway was the backbone of New Zealand’s innings. He produced a superb knock of 227, facing 316 balls and striking 28 fours. Late cameos from Rachin Ravindra, who scored a brisk 72 not out with six fours and two sixes, and Ajaz Patel, who added an unbeaten 30, prompted captain Tom Latham to declare.
The West Indies bowling attack was under sustained pressure throughout the innings. However, Justin Greaves (2 for 83), Jayden Seales (2 for 100) and Anderson Phillip (2 for 154) managed to pick up two wickets each to offer some resistance. After lunch, Conway was dismissed lbw by Seales following a disciplined spell.
The Caribbean side also struggled in the field. Kavem Hodge dropped Conway when he was on 206, while Greaves put down a chance at slip to give Daryl Mitchell a reprieve when he was on nine.
Injuries and illness have added to West Indies’ concerns. Kemar Roach is nursing a hamstring strain and is doubtful to bat, while leading batsman Shai Hope was unwell and remained at the team hotel.
