Bangladesh captain Litton Kumar Das expressed frustration over Shamim Hossain Patwary’s reckless shot selection during the first T20I against West Indies, where the hosts fell 16 runs short of the 166-run target.
After losing three wickets for 38 runs within just 26 balls, Bangladesh’s batting lineup collapsed under pressure. None of the batters managed to show composure, but Litton was particularly unhappy with the way Shamim threw his wicket away without assessing the situation.
Despite a late fight from the bowlers — Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Nasum Ahmed, Taskin Ahmed, and Mustafizur Rahman — Bangladesh couldn’t recover from the early batting disaster. Three consecutive sixes from Rovman Powell in the final over widened the margin of defeat.
Speaking at the post-match presentation, Litton said,
“They batted really well in the first 10 overs when the wicket was a bit slow. If we could have picked a couple of wickets early, they might have been under pressure. We were in the game till the 19th over, but Rovman batted brilliantly — that can happen in cricket. We need to improve in the slog overs and keep that in mind for the next game.”
On Shamim’s batting, the skipper didn’t hide his disappointment, “We lost too many wickets in the powerplay. I’m very disappointed with the way Shamim batted. He needs to think about it. You can’t just come in and start swinging every time — sometimes you have to take responsibility, and he must do that.”
Litton also lamented a few dropped catches on the field, “Except for the last over, we bowled quite well. But we must take our catches — they took some excellent ones.”
The Bangladesh captain admitted that both batting failures and fielding lapses contributed to the defeat but remained hopeful of improvement in the next match of the series.
