BPL in a New Avatar: Chattogram, Rajshahi, and Sylhet Franchises Get New Names
The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is returning with its usual excitement, but in a new avatar. In this season, three teams have changed their names, reflecting the touch of new owners. On Thursday, the BPL Governing Council approved the names of the five teams, where the familiar names of Dhaka and Rangpur remain unchanged, while Chattogram, Rajshahi, and Sylhet appear with a new identity.
Rangpur Riders have kept their name unchanged. The Dhaka franchise will also play under the name “Dhaka Capitals,” as in the previous season. Meanwhile, the three new teams are named Chattogram Royals, Rajshahi Warriors, and Sylhet Titans.
The Chattogram franchise is new this time. In the past, this franchise has played under different names such as Chattogram Kings, Chattogram Vikings, and Chattogram Challengers. The Rajshahi franchise is owned by Nabil Group, which has previously seen teams like Duronto Rajshahi, Rajshahi Kings, Rajshahi Royals, and Durbar Rajshahi.
A total of 11 organizations had shown interest in acquiring a team this season. After evaluating financial capability and other qualifications, the BPL finally approved five organizations as franchise owners.
According to BCB’s plan, the new season of the BPL will commence on December 19. The players’ draft may be held on November 17.
