Who Should Be Pakistan's Captain? Younis Khan Shares His Choice

Due to the poor performance of their players, Pakistan was eliminated from the World Cup in the group stage. The dismal performance of the Pakistani cricketers on the global stage has led to widespread criticism. The primary blame for the failure is being placed on Pakistan's captain, Babar Azam. Many believe Babar's tenure as captain might be coming to an end.

Neither Babar Azam nor the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has yet made any official announcement regarding Babar's future as captain. However, former Pakistani cricketer Younis Khan has suggested a new candidate for Pakistan’s captaincy.

In a Pakistani program, Younis Khan stated, "Why can't Fakhar Zaman be the captain of Pakistan? Isn’t he a performer? Didn’t he do well in the last 50-over World Cup? Who gave us hope in that World Cup? Fakhar had a poor start in the 2023 ODI World Cup, but he turned things around in the second half, which led to Pakistan’s success."

Fakhar Zaman is primarily an opening batsman. However, in the T20 World Cup, he was seen batting in the middle order. Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam opened in the World Cup. Praising Fakhar for his flexibility in batting wherever the team needed, Younis further added,

"Who has sacrificed his opening slot for the team, batting at four, five, or six? Who gave up his place? Fakhar Zaman. Why can’t he be the captain?"

In the last ODI World Cup, Babar Azam was the captain of Pakistan. However, due to the team’s underwhelming performance in that World Cup, Babar stepped down from the captaincy. Yet, he regained the leadership of both the ODI and T20 teams before the T20 World Cup. Now, it remains to be seen what the future holds for Babar's captaincy!
