Bangladesh aims to reclaim their pride
The Bangladesh-India Women's T20 cricket series is set to commence in Sylhet from tomorrow. This marks the return of the two teams to T20 competition after a nine-month hiatus. Last year, Bangladesh managed to secure a win against India in the T20 series, and this time, under the leadership of Nigar Sultana, the team is eager to produce good results on their home soil. After a tough series against Australia, the Bangladesh team is determined to regain their form.
In their last series in July of the previous year, India won the series 2-1. The cricket matches between Bangladesh and India last year were not only thrilling but also controversial. As the anniversary of those matches approaches, a new chapter of rivalry is about to begin, with all matches scheduled in Sylhet this time.
In their most recent home series in both formats of limited-overs cricket, Bangladesh suffered defeats in all six matches against the Australian women's team. The Bangladesh team aims to improve their performance and move past their disappointing previous series. During a press conference, captain Nigar Sultana expressed her hopes for the team:
"In the last six to seven months, we played well, though we were slightly off against Australia. The expectations people had from us were somewhat tarnished because of that. We want to restore those expectations. Our team isn’t highlighted much. We have come this far with the love from the people and media support, and we hope to bring that vibe back."
For the first time, the Bangladesh women's national team will play a five-match T20 series, facing a strong Indian team. Captain Nigar Sultana Jyoti is hopeful about achieving positive outcomes in the series. On the eve of the series, she commented on the rivalry with India:
"Whatever happened in the past is in the past. We are a more mature team now, and that's why they take us seriously. India is a strong team and has come with full strength. This is the team that will play in the World Cup. Playing five T20 matches against a team like India is a big opportunity for us. We might not have many big achievements in Sylhet's stadium, but we have some good cricket memories. We plan to build on those, Inshallah."
