ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024: Stepping into the Era of Equal Prize Money
The ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024 will be the first ICC event where women cricketers will receive the same prize money as their male counterparts, marking a significant milestone in the history of sports. This decision was made at the ICC Annual Conference in July 2023, where the ICC Board achieved its prize money equality target seven years ahead of its 2030 schedule, making cricket the first major team sport to offer equal prize money for both men’s and women’s World Cups.
The winners of the tournament, which will now be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), will receive USD 2.34 million, a 134% increase from the USD 1 million that Australia received for winning the title in South Africa in 2023.
The runners-up will receive USD 1.17 million, a 134% increase compared to the USD 500,000 South Africa earned for reaching the final at Newlands Cricket Ground in 2023.
The two semi-finalists will each receive USD 675,000 (up from USD 210,000 in 2023), bringing the total prize pool to USD 7,958,080, which is a massive 225% increase from last year's total prize fund of USD 2.45 million.
This move aligns with the ICC’s strategy to prioritize women’s cricket and accelerate its growth by 2032. From now on, teams will receive equal prize money for equivalent performances in comparable events, and they will receive the same amount for winning a match at these events. The prize money for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 will be higher due to the participation of 10 additional teams and 32 more matches.
Each team will earn USD 31,154 for every win during the group stages, while the six teams that do not reach the semi-finals will share a pool of USD 1.35 million based on their final positions.
In comparison, the equivalent pool for the six teams in 2023 was USD 180,000, which was shared equally. Teams finishing third or fourth in their groups will each receive USD 270,000, while teams finishing fifth will each get USD 135,000.
All 10 participating teams are guaranteed USD 112,500.
The increase in prize money for the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024 is in line with the increase in the total prize fund for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022, which also rose to USD 3.5 million.
The ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024 will begin on October 3, with Bangladesh playing against Scotland at Sharjah Cricket Stadium. There has been a slight change to the schedule for the doubleheader on Saturday, October 5, in Sharjah, with Australia now facing Sri Lanka in the afternoon at 2:00 PM, followed by Bangladesh versus England at 6:00 PM local time. Ten teams will play a total of 23 matches in Dubai and Sharjah to decide the champions of 2024.
All amounts are in US Dollars.
