After a decade, the Bangladesh women's cricket team has tasted victory in the World Cup, defeating Scotland by 16 runs. Their last win in a World Cup match was in 2014. This long-awaited triumph came during the opening match of the T20 World Cup.
Ritu Moni was named Player of the Match for her outstanding bowling performance, taking 2 wickets for just 15 runs in four overs. The award was presented to her by Asif Mahmud, the advisor to the interim government’s Ministry of Youth and Sports.
Asif Mahmud, who is also a leading coordinator of the anti-discrimination movement, attended the award ceremony on the field during the World Cup's opening match.
Although Bangladesh was set to host the women's T20 World Cup, the venue changed due to political developments in the country. Instead of Bangladesh, the mega event is being held in the United Arab Emirates, although the rights to the tournament still belong to Bangladesh.
Asif Mahmud, along with a delegation from the Ministry of Youth and Sports and BCB director Nazmul Abedin Fahim, visited the UAE to inspect the opening venue and watch the match.
In the opening match, Bangladesh batted first and set a target of 119 runs in their allotted 20 overs. Scotland, in response, managed to score only 103 runs, marking a successful start to the World Cup for the Bangladeshi women.
