Former Black Caps star Craig McMillan has been appointed as the full-time assistant coach of the New Zealand Women’s cricket team. After serving in a part-time role with the White Ferns for nearly a year, New Zealand Cricket has now confirmed his permanent appointment.
McMillan will oversee batting and fielding, working alongside head coach Ben Sawyer and Dean Brownlie. His role officially began this week. With the new responsibility, he will step away from commentary and other coaching duties. McMillan was also part of the support staff when the White Ferns clinched the 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in the UAE. Expressing his delight over the permanent role, McMillan said:
“I’m absolutely thrilled to be in this role with the White Ferns. Women’s cricket is growing stronger, and I’m excited to continue working with such talented players. I want to help them reach their goals. The past year has flown by, and I’ve enjoyed every moment. This team is constantly improving, pushing each other, and achieving special things on the world stage.”
Looking ahead to the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup, he added:
“We’ve had several important camps in preparation for the 50-over World Cup, including a crucial one in Chennai, India. The players had the opportunity to adapt to Indian conditions, which will be valuable in October–November during the World Cup. The team is eager to head back to India and compete on the global stage.”
Notably, New Zealand’s Women’s World Cup squad will be announced on September 10.
