Pakistan suffered a 43-run defeat against New Zealand in the third and final ODI at Bay Oval, resulting in a 3-0 series whitewash. While expressing disappointment over the series loss, Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan has drawn criticism for his comments regarding the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL).
Following the match, Rizwan said,
“We will go back and discuss what we have learned from this series. We will enjoy the PSL. It’s a big tournament for us. We couldn’t perform well in the Champions Trophy and this series, but hopefully, we will do better in the PSL.”
His remarks sparked backlash on social media. Many fans criticized the timing and tone of his statement, calling it irresponsible in light of the national team’s poor performance.
One fan wrote, “For Rizwan, PSL is more important than the national team—shameful!” Another added, “Rizwan’s comment sums up the core problem of Pakistan cricket. This mentality needs to change!”
Pakistan has been going through a rough patch in international cricket, losing 11 of their last 12 matches. One match against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi was abandoned due to rain.
Despite the setbacks, Rizwan highlighted a few positives:
“Babar Azam is in good form, Naseem Shah batted brilliantly, and Sufiyan bowled really well. Credit to New Zealand, they performed well in all departments.”
The Pakistan Super League is set to begin on April 11, with defending champions Islamabad United taking on Lahore Qalandars in the opening match. Rizwan will represent Multan Sultans in the tournament.
