WCA Criticizes BPL for Unpaid Player Salaries Amidst Ongoing Issues
One of the most controversial issues in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is the non-payment of player salaries by several franchises. This issue is not new, as such incidents have been occurring in almost every edition of the tournament. However, this season, the problem has escalated significantly. Despite the BPL having passed its 10th edition, a permanent solution to the salary issue has yet to be found, leading to dissatisfaction from the World Cricketer's Association (WCA).
The WCA has harshly criticized the organization of the BPL, particularly regarding the failure to ensure that players receive their dues. Tom Moffat, CEO of WCA, spoke to ESPN Cricinfo, expressing his frustration over the situation.
He said, "The issue of unpaid salaries in the BPL is extremely disappointing. We repeatedly hear such reports from this tournament. The organizers are constantly being blamed for this issue."
Moffat further emphasized, "This is completely unacceptable. They (the BCB) have not been able to improve the situation. The promotion and growth of any tournament depend on the players. In any league, there must be certain basic protections in the contracts, ensuring that players have the confidence to maintain a minimum standard."
Notably, with the current season nearing its end, Durbar Rajshahi has yet to pay their players. Despite promises, their payment checks have bounced. This issue has led to incidents such as foreign players boycotting practice and even the team playing without them.
It's not just Rajshahi; Chittagong Kings are also embroiled in a salary dispute. The franchise owner himself admitted to not paying a player. This ongoing issue has raised serious concerns about the future of player welfare in the BPL and the need for the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to take stronger actions to resolve these problems.
