Sam Curran's performance as the stand-in captain of Punjab Kings has been subpar, with the team's overall performance also lacking. Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag has raised concerns about this. Sehwag, discussing the matter, has been somewhat critical of Curran, particularly his batting and bowling performances. He seems uncertain about Curran's role as the leader of Punjab this season.
Punjab suffered a defeat against Gujarat Titans, scoring only a few runs while batting first. There wasn't much hope of winning the match from there. Curran opened the batting and scored 20 runs off 19 balls, also taking 1 wicket for 18 runs in his 2 overs.
Speaking about Curran's role, Sehwag said, "I didn't want Sam Curran to be considered an all-rounder, someone who doesn't contribute much, either with the bat or the ball. Either you win matches with your batting or with your bowling."
Curran seems to be content with his 63-run innings against Delhi Capitals in the previous match but has struggled to find his form since then. In a total of 8 matches played so far, he has scored an average of 19 runs with a total of 153 runs. In the current season, he has an average of 27.60 with the bat, scoring 276 runs and taking 11 wickets.
On April 26, Curran and his team Punjab Kings will face Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens. Looking at the points table, Punjab currently sits at the ninth position.
