Tim Southee quits as New Zealand Test captain
Star pacer Tim Southee has stepped down from his role as the Test captain of New Zealand. New Zealand Cricket announced that Tom Latham will take on the captaincy for the full term.
Southee's resignation comes just days after New Zealand suffered a 2-0 series defeat against Sri Lanka. Latham's first assignment as the full-time captain will be the upcoming Test series in India.
Since his debut in 2008, Tim Southee has played 102 Tests, claiming a total of 382 wickets, establishing himself as one of New Zealand's leading fast bowlers. He took over the captaincy from Kane Williamson in December 2022, leading the team in 14 Tests during this period, with six wins, six losses, and two draws.
Reflecting on his decision to resign, Southee emphasized that it was made in the best interest of the team. He stated, "Captaining New Zealand in such a special format has been a great honor. I have always tried to put the team first throughout my career, and I believe this decision is best for the team."
"I believe the best way I can continue to contribute is by focusing on my performance on the field, returning to my best form, taking wickets, and helping New Zealand win Test matches."
