With 870 rating points, Indian star spinner Ravichandran Ashwin currently tops the ICC Test bowler rankings. He will lead India’s spin attack in the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh.

Ashwin’s home ground is the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, where the first Test between Bangladesh and India will take place. The first Test begins on September 19, followed by the second and final Test starting on September 27 at Green Park Stadium in Kanpur.

Earlier this year, Ashwin was the leading wicket-taker in the Test series against England. As always, this off-spinning all-rounder will be one of India’s key players in the series against Bangladesh. Ashwin, who will turn 38 tomorrow (September 17), stands on the verge of breaking several records.

Here are the records Ashwin could achieve during the series against Bangladesh:

Most wickets in the World Test Championship (WTC): Ashwin has taken 174 wickets in 35 WTC matches. He needs 14 more wickets to surpass Australia’s Nathan Lyon (187) and become the leading wicket-taker in the World Test Championship.

Most wickets in WTC 2023-25 cycle: Ashwin has taken 42 wickets in the current WTC cycle. He is just 10 wickets away from surpassing Australia's Josh Hazlewood (51) as the top wicket-taker in this WTC cycle.

Most five-wicket hauls in WTC: Ashwin has taken five-wicket hauls 10 times in 35 WTC matches, tied with Nathan Lyon. One more five-wicket haul against Bangladesh would make Ashwin the sole record-holder in this category.

Most wickets in Bangladesh-India Tests: Ashwin has taken 23 wickets in 6 Tests against Bangladesh. He needs 9 more wickets to surpass Zaheer Khan (31) and become the highest wicket-taker in Bangladesh-India Test encounters.

Most wickets on Indian soil: Across all formats, Ashwin has taken 455 wickets in 126 matches in India. He needs 22 more wickets to surpass Anil Kumble (476 wickets in 153 matches) and become the bowler with the most wickets on Indian soil.

Apart from these 5 records, Ashwin also has the chance to surpass West Indies’ Courtney Walsh (519) and Australia’s Nathan Lyon (530) on the list of all-time Test wicket-takers. He needs 4 and 15 wickets, respectively, to overtake them. Additionally, if he claims two five-wicket hauls, Ashwin will surpass Australia’s Shane Warne (37) for five-wicket hauls in Tests. Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan leads with 67 five-wicket hauls.

Ashwin’s remarkable journey continues, and these upcoming matches may further cement his legacy in the history of Test cricket.
